As part of the Petäjävesi Elää! Week, a History and Heritage Weekend will be held at Petäjävesi Old Church and the surrounding area on 22-23 August. The programme includes 18th-century historical reenactments, a heritage market, and a period-style church service. The week also features free Secrets of the Churchyard guided tours at the Old Church cemetery on Wednesday, 26 August, at 2 pm and 4 pm.
History and Heritage Weekend, 22-23 August 2026
During the Petäjävesi Elää! Week, the 18th century will come to life around Petäjävesi Old Church and the nearby Lemettilä Farm through the work of historical reenactors. Approximately 40 enthusiasts from across Finland will gather in an authentic period camp. The event is organized by the Rautpohja Artillery Guild.
On Saturday, 22 August, from 10 am to 4 pm, visitors can enjoy a traditional heritage market, historical craft demonstrations, and activities for the whole family. The highlight of the day is a dramatic Great Northern War (Greater Wrath) themed battle reenactment at 12:30 pm, featuring the thunder of muskets and cannons as history comes alive.
Throughout the day, visitors can explore the reenactors’ camp, view 18th-century military equipment, and learn about period clothing and everyday life.

The day concludes with a gathering showcasing Finland’s national costumes and a traditional community dance, the Huutokatrilli, in which everyone is welcome to participate.
On Sunday, 23 August, at 10 am, a rare 18th-century-style church service will be held in Petäjävesi Old Church. The service will be conducted by Ville von Gross, Parish Priest of Keuruu, together with parish staff and the church choir.
Free “Secrets of the Churchyard” Guided Tours, 26 August
To celebrate the Petäjävesi Elää! Week, the popular “Secrets of the Churchyard” themed tour at Petäjävesi Old Church will be offered free of charge on Wednesday, 26 August, at 2 pm and 4 pm.
During the tour, visitors will explore the historic cemetery that forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The guide will share stories of the churchyard, traditional burial customs, local beliefs, and the important role the church and cemetery played in the lives of the people of Petäjävesi in past centuries.
The guided tour lasts approximately 30 minutes and takes place mainly outdoors, so visitors are advised to dress appropriately for the weather.
